The Challenge

The global agrifood system sits at the center of the intertwined planetary and human health crises. It accounts for approximately one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions and uses half of the world’s habitable land. Poor diets are estimated to contribute to one in five premature deaths worldwide, and are largely a consequence of our current industrial food system, which relies on intensive resource extraction and environmentally damaging practices that strain ecosystems, accelerate biodiversity loss, and destabilize the climate. The agrifood system is also increasingly vulnerable: climate volatility, water cycle disruption, soil degradation, and ecosystem collapse undermine agricultural productivity and threaten livelihoods across the value chain.

Transforming the agrifood system is therefore not a single-issue challenge. It requires systemic change that restores ecosystems, strengthens rural economies, improves labor conditions, and reconnects food production with nutrition and health outcomes. The future of food must be regenerative by design, capable of nourishing both people and planet for generations to come.

Astanor's Strategy

Astanor utilizes impact-driven investments to catalyze the transition to a regenerative, fair, and resilient agrifood system. Moving away from a model based on extraction enables food systems that regenerate natural resources while delivering nutritious, health-promoting food for a growing global population. Astanor collaborates with a wide network of scientists, policymakers, activists, and tech entrepreneurs to invest in mission-driven companies with a variety of focuses. This includes companies reinventing the food system at an accelerated pace, companies focused on restoring soil and ocean health, enabling healthier nutrition, and building resilient and circular supply chains. By combining science, policy engagement, and capital, Astanor seeks to help drive an industry-wide transformation that advances both planet and human health.

Long-term Intended Outcome

Invest in the future of an agrifood system that provides affordable nutrients to 10 billion people, preserves and regenerates natural resources, contributes to decarbonization, and reverses land and ocean biodiversity loss.

Tracking Progress

Across its fund vehicles, Astanor has invested €538 million in developing an agrifood system that is regenerative and resilient. Following the co-founding of the Impact Valuation Hub in 2024, Astanor launched the hub’s first cohort in 2025, and established a series of working groups to develop practical guidance and build the analytical content required to embed impact valuation into investment practice. The Hub has rapidly scaled to over 20 members representing more than $1 trillion in assets under management.

Overall, Astanor avoided 10,596 metric tons of CO₂e, 200,000 cubic meters of water use, and spared 154 metric tons of wild fish. By financing 486 agroforestry projects, Astanor has also avoided ~2,230 hectares of land use. The cumulative value of financing for agricultural projects in 2025 totaled €39 million, with over 4,000 farmers provided financing on average annually. Additionally, 9,147 jobs were created through financed projects. Astanor’s intersectional theory of change touches a range of SDGs beyond the five listed above, including SDGs 6, 8, 9, 11, and 12.
